Fuel Up with These Chocolate-Coated Energy Balls
The Perfect Pre-Workout or Endurance Rescue Fuel
Looking for a clean, energizing bite before you hit the gym? These chocolate-coated energy balls are an ideal pre-workout snack—high in carbs to fuel your muscles with glycogen, moderate in healthy fats for steady energy, and containing just enough protein to help reduce muscle breakdown—making them perfect for strength training, HIIT or circuit workouts, and endurance sports. I will definitely make some of these and have them ready at the breaks for an option during my ultra endurance paddle, Last Paddler Standing, in December.
Why They’re Great for Pre-Workout
1. High in Carbohydrates
These balls are packed with natural sugars from dates and a touch of raw milk chocolate—ideal for quickly replenishing your glycogen stores. You can also lessen the carbs by not dipping the balls in chocolate.
2. Moderate in Healthy Fats
A small amount of olive oil and pistachios adds healthy fats that slow digestion just enough to provide steady, longer-lasting energy throughout your session—especially useful for endurance and strength-based workouts.
3. Contains Protein
A scoop of peanut protein powder and a sprinkle of chia seeds offer a light protein boost. While it’s not a full post-workout recovery hit, it’s enough to help prevent muscle breakdown during high-output workouts. Want more protein? Add more chia seeds.
The Recipe
The Base: Sweet, Nutty, and Functional
In a food processor, blend together:
8 oz seedless dates
1/2 tbsp chia seeds
1 scoops peanut protein powder
2 heaping tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp olive oil
20 pistachios, crushed
The Chocolate Coating
In a small saucepan over low heat, whisk:
1½ tbsp raw milk
1 oz 87% chocolate
When smooth and glossy, roll the balls in the chocolate sauce. Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours.
