The Unexpected Hormone in Your Favorite IPA
A Beer Lover’s Journey into the Science of Hops and Estrogen
Before I immersed myself in functional medicine and medical education, there was another passion that shaped who I am today.
Beer.
I’ve been a craft beer enthusiast for most of my adult life. Not just someone who enjoys a beer now and then, but someone who appreciates the history, tradition, and artistry behind brewing.
Back in the early 2000s, I was one of many supporters of Free the Hops, a grassroots nonprofit that worked to modernize Alabama’s restrictive beer laws. At the time, Alabama prohibited the sale of many higher-alcohol specialty beers, making it impossible to legally purchase countless Belgian Trappist ales, Abbey beers, imperial stouts, double IPAs, and other world-renowned brews.
The movement wasn’t about encouraging people to drink more, it was about consumer choice and allowing adults access to the same incredible beers that were available throughout much of the world. Thankfully, the laws eventually changed, helping pave the way for Alabama’s craft beer industry to grow.
Then life took me to Europe.
For eleven years, I lived in the Netherlands, where Belgium was practically in my backyard. Weekend trips often included stopping at breweries, cafés, and bottle shops where Trappist ales, Abbey beers, saisons, lambics, German lagers, and Czech pilsners weren’t exotic imports—they were simply part of everyday life. Even today, I still appreciate an exceptionally well-crafted Belgian Dubbel or Tripel.
So imagine my surprise when, while researching hormones for an entirely unrelated topic, I came across something I had never associated with beer.
Hops.
More specifically, one of the most potent naturally occurring phytoestrogens ever identified. After decades of enjoying great beer, supporting a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to it, and living in one of the world’s great beer cultures, I had never once stopped to ask whether one of beer’s signature ingredients might influence hormone biology.
Naturally, I went down the rabbit hole. Here’s what the research actually says.
What Makes Hops So Interesting?
Hops (Humulus lupulus) aren’t just responsible for the bitterness and floral aroma of your favorite IPA. For centuries, they’ve been used to flavor and preserve beer, but they’ve also been used in traditional medicine to support women’s health.
Long before scientists understood why, women who harvested hops often reported menstrual changes after spending long days handling the plants. Over time, hop baths and hop extracts were also used to help relieve menopausal hot flashes and other gynecological symptoms. These observations led researchers to ask whether hops contained compounds capable of affecting estrogen activity.
The answer turned out to be yes. Scientists identified a naturally occurring compound called 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN), which is now recognized as one of the most potent phytoestrogens found in nature.
Phytoestrogens are plant compounds that can attach to estrogen receptors in the body. They are not the same as human estrogen, but they can influence estrogen signaling. How much effect they have depends on many factors, including the amount consumed, hormone levels, liver function, gut bacteria, genetics, and overall health.
One of the most interesting discoveries is that your body can actually make more 8-PN from other hop compounds. Specialized enzymes in the liver and bacteria in the gut convert a precursor called isoxanthohumol into active 8-PN. Not everyone does this equally well. Some people naturally produce much more than others because of differences in their gut microbiome and genetic variations in the enzymes responsible for processing these compounds.
This means two people drinking the same beer could be exposed to very different amounts of the active phytoestrogen.
Not all beers contain the same amount of hops. In general, beers brewed with larger amounts of hops may contain higher levels of hop-derived plant compounds, although the exact amount of 8-PN varies depending on the hop variety, brewing process, storage conditions, and individual metabolism.
This has led researchers to wonder whether heavy beer drinkers—particularly men who consume large amounts of highly hopped beers over many years and who efficiently convert hop compounds into 8-PN—may experience greater estrogenic exposure than others. While this is biologically plausible, the degree to which it contributes to hormone-related changes likely varies considerably from person to person and remains an active area of research.1
Does Drinking Beer Increase Estrogen?
This is where things become more nuanced than the headlines. The answer isn’t simply yes or no. Researchers have spent years studying hop extracts—particularly standardized extracts used in menopause research—not beer itself. Some clinical studies have found that purified hop extracts may help reduce menopausal hot flashes because of their estrogenic activity.
Beer, however, is a much more complicated beverage. The amount of hop-derived phytoestrogens in beer isn't fixed. It varies depending on the hop variety, brewing process, and beer style. Alcohol adds another layer of complexity by affecting liver function, hormone metabolism, inflammation, and sleep—all of which can influence the body's hormonal balance.In other words, if someone experiences hormonal symptoms after drinking beer, hops may be only one piece of a much larger puzzle. 2
Your Gut May Play a Role
One of the more fascinating discoveries is that your gut microbiome may influence how much of these compounds actually become biologically active. The good news (or bad news, depending on your perspective) is that certain bacteria living in your intestines can convert another, much more abundant hop compound into 8-PN. Not everyone’s microbiome does this equally well. Some people convert very little, while others produce significantly more, which means their exposure to the active phytoestrogen may be much higher even if they drink the same amount of beer.
Researchers believe this may help explain why some people appear more sensitive to hop-derived phytoestrogens than others. Your gut bacteria, genetics, liver metabolism, and even your overall health all play a role in determining how your body responds. In other words, two people could drink the exact same IPA and have very different levels of exposure to the active compound. It’s another reminder that nutrition—and our response to it—is rarely one-size-fits-all. 3 This is yet another example of why understanding your gut microbiome can provide valuable insights into how your body responds to food and plant compounds.
Why Some People Feel Worse Than Others
If you’ve ever noticed that certain beers affect you differently than others, there may be more going on than just the alcohol content.
While alcohol certainly plays a role, your body’s response can also be influenced by the amount of hops in the beer, your ability to metabolize hop-derived phytoestrogens, your gut microbiome, liver function, hormone balance, and other ingredients such as histamine, sulfites, or gluten.
This doesn’t mean hops are harmful or that everyone will respond the same way. In fact, most people won’t notice any difference at all. For individuals who are already hormonally sensitive—or who consume heavily hopped beers regularly—these factors may help explain why one beer feels very different from another.
What About Men?
Whenever phytoestrogens are mentioned, someone inevitably asks whether IPAs lower testosterone. The evidence simply isn’t that straightforward.
Heavy alcohol consumption is well known to reduce testosterone production, impair liver function, increase aromatase activity, and disrupt the body’s normal hormone balance. Those effects have been demonstrated repeatedly and are likely far more significant than any potential contribution from hop phytoestrogens alone.4
As with most things in nutrition and health, dose matters. Enjoying an occasional craft beer is very different from drinking several beers every day for years. The occasional IPA is unlikely to have a meaningful impact on hormone balance, but chronic heavy alcohol consumption carries well-documented health risks that extend far beyond the hops.
My Perspective Has Changed
Learning more about the science behind hops didn’t make me give up craft beer—it simply made me more intentional. I still enjoy a great IPA from time to time, but I don’t reach for them as often as I once did. More often, I’ll choose a Belgian ale, a crisp pilsner, or another style that better fits how I want to feel the next day. For me, it’s less about restriction and more about making choices that support my overall health and performance.
The relationship between hops, phytoestrogens, and human hormones is more nuanced than the internet would have you believe. While compounds in hops can interact with estrogen receptors, the real-world effects depend on far more than the beer itself.
If you’re healthy and enjoy the occasional craft beer, there’s little reason to panic. If you’re struggling with hormone-related symptoms, poor recovery, chronic inflammation, or simply notice that certain beers leave you feeling worse than others, it’s worth paying attention. Curiosity—not fear—is what drives good health decisions.
Sometimes the best information comes from listening to your own body, asking better questions, and making small adjustments over time.
