If you’re serious about energy, resilience, and long-term health, understanding the role of NAD+ and NAC is non-negotiable. These two compounds have distinct functions but work synergistically to protect your cells from stress, support mitochondrial energy, and help your body recover from illness, inflammation, and fatigue.
Here’s how they differ, how they work together, and why I pair them with other key nutrients like methylene blue, glycine, creatine, and collagen to support total-body recovery—especially during times of oxidative stress like chronic illness or viral infections.
What Is NAD?
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is an essential coenzyme involved in mitochondrial energy production, DNA repair, and healthy aging. It's a linchpin in cellular metabolism, required for producing ATP (your body’s fuel) and activating longevity-associated enzymes like sirtuins.
As we age—or experience chronic stress, inflammation, or infection—our NAD+ levels drop, leading to lower energy, slower healing, and increased oxidative damage to our cells. These precursors are converted into NAD+ inside your cells. A diet rich in B vitamins helps, but under stress, supplementation becomes necessary to restore optimal levels.

What Is NAC?
NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is a precursor to glutathione, your body’s most powerful antioxidant. NAC helps neutralize free radicals and repair oxidative damage, making it especially valuable during viral infections, autoimmune flares, or exposure to toxins. It plays a critical role in the detoxification process especially in the liver, immune system modulation, inflammation control, and helps protect the lungs by keeping the mucous thin.
How They Work Together
NAD+ and NAC operate on two sides of the cellular defense system. NAD+ fuels your mitochondria and helps generate energy while NAC defends, acting as a buffer against oxidative stress and inflammation. In periods of increased oxidative stress such as chronic fatigue, long COVID, autoimmune diseases, or even recovery from overtraining—you need both energy production and antioxidant capacity. These molecules work in tandem to restore cellular balance and function.
Food First. Sometimes, You Need More.
Both NAD⁺ precursors (such as niacin, tryptophan) and NAC-related amino acids like cysteine can be found in a nutrient-dense diet. Foods including eggs, organ meats, salmon, and poultry support NAD⁺ production and cysteine availability. Additionally, broccoli, beans, and chicken are rich in both cysteine and glutathione-supporting compounds. In high-demand states—like illness, stress, or environmental toxicity—your body may require more than food alone can provide.
What I Use and Why
In addition to eating real food, one of my go-to recovery and resilience stacks is a daily combo that includes NAC—paired with a few powerhouse additions that I’ve personally found to make a big difference. The formula I use includes methylene blue for brain oxygenation and mitochondrial support, glycine to boost glutathione and aid sleep and detox, creatine for physical strength and mental performance, and collagen for joint, gut, and skin support.
